THE people of Umzimkhulu are mourning the death of Nkosinathi Maxhakana (56) who was gunned down in his home village of Rietvlei outside Umzimkhulu last Saturday afternoon.

The SAPS said he was shot several times while he was replacing a light bulb on the veranda of his home.

“He [Maxhakana] was fixing a bulb on the veranda when unknown men fired several shots at him and he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene,” said SAPS spokeswoman Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, who added that a case of murder was opened at Ibisi police station. She said no arrest have been made.

Speaking to Fever, Maxhakana’s son Khanyiso said he was not far from home when he heard gunshots at 5.50 pm. “When I rushed home, I saw my father lying in a pool of blood and I felt saddened,” said Khanyiso .

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda visited Maxhakana’s family on Monday morning accompanied by African National Congress Harry Gwala chairperson Zamo Nxumalo and community members.

Kaunda said his department is working hard to end the killings of people in the province.

Maxhakana worked as a community development worker under the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Umzimkhulu. He was an ANC branch secretary in Rietvlei in 2007.

Umzimkhulu Ward 12 Councillor Mzolisi Ndobe said Maxhakana was one of the people who worked hard to develop rural communities.

“He [Maxhakana] played a role during Sukuma Sakhe meetings, in community gatherings and community projects.

“He was active in the development of agriculture in the village and helping ward councillors when necessary,” said Ndobe.

He will be buried tomorrow.
