PUPILS from Sonyongwana High School in Creighton will no longer have to travel long distances on foot when going to and from school after a non-profit organisation, Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), donated 920 bicycles to the school on Tuesday.

The organisation approached the Department of Education’s former Pholela Circuit chief education specialist, Thiyane Magaqa, with the aim of adopting a rural school in 2015, and Magaqa identified Sonyongwana High.

When the school was adopted, pupils were using pit toilets and some travelled up to eight kilometres on foot when going to school and this was affecting their academic performance.

The organisation has sponsored the school with e-learning infrastructure, physical science furniture, apparatus and science kit. It has also hired mathematics and physical science specialists to assist the pupils.

Clean water and flushing toilets have been built and girls are given sanitaryware through the efforts of the organisation.

School principal Sifiso Xulu said life has not been the same at the school since RDM intervened. “Our matric results improved from 42,3% in 2015 to 70% in 2016 and 91,36% last year,” said Xulu.

He thanked the organisation for the bicycle donating, saying the late arrival of pupils and absenteeism are going to be a thing of the past. He said pupils will also be able to attend evening classes after receiving the bicycles.
