Blocked drains fixed at last

A FAMILY of three adults and six children from Bhongweni area, in Kokstad, has thanked the Fever for making public their terrible living conditions caused by two blocked sewer drains near their home.

The story of Siphokazi Nokhwabuza, Nontlahla Ntshangase and Nomonde Ntshangase, whose life and health were put into jeopardy due to two blocked sewer drains near their home, was featured in the July 20 publication.

Speaking to the Fever on Wednesday, Nokhwabuza said the drains were fixed last week and they are now living a joyful life.

Since 2013, the family had been forced to deal with the repercussions of living next door to the blocked drains.

Because of the muddy and smelly condition of the yard, children were unable to play outside. Aside from other health related issues, the five-year-old boy who lived with the family had also developed a rash on his legs and feet, which turned into sores. The boy had been sent home from school due to the sores.

“My son is better and, by next week, he will be going back to school,” said the boy’s mother Nokhwabuza.

Harry Gwala District Municipality spokesman Ndabezitha Tenza said sewer blockages are normally caused by foreign objects.

“The municipality has conducted several campaigns to educate people about not dropping foreign objects in sewer lines to avoid blockages,” he said.
