ACCORDING to South African National Blood Services (SANBS) staff member Shagnette Tomlinson, blood is mostly required in winter by people who are affected by coughing and other flu related symptoms.

Tomlinson spoke to the Feverat a blood donor campaign held at St Patrick’s Church in Kokstad on Monday.

She said every unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives and that their aim was to collect 3 000 units of blood per day to make sure there is sufficient blood in the health care system.

“We have many blood donation centres across the country that people can donate to. The blood we collect is provided to public hospitals to be used by patients,” said Tomlinson.

She said during winter people get sick and require blood. Pupils who experience trauma after writing exams also require more blood.

“We need all blood types from people who are between 16 and 65 years old, weighing 50kg and more. In March, we encouraged first time blood donors to support the campaign and they responded well,” she added.

SANBS proceeded to Matatiele and Cedarville on Tuesday.

“We help blood donors to complete medical question forms and do blood tests. It does not take up much of a person’s time. People must keep donating blood to save lives,” she said.

Mbalenhle Mkhize said she was donating blood for the fifth time and her three relatives from Scottburgh also donate blood.

“I was feeling nervous however I enjoyed my first experience. I donated blood after my colleagues encouraged me and I would like other people to donate blood,” said first-time donar Sisamkele Phungula.

The next blood donor campaign is expected to be held in Kokstad around September.
