FOLLOWING a rigorous adjudication process, which saw the top eight finalists presenting their business concepts to the panel of judges, Trevor Colvelle from Bulwer came first in the Inkunzi’isematholeni Youth in Business competition hosted by Ithala Development Finance Corporation in Durban on November 23.

The competition attracted many young people with innovative and sustainable business concepts.

Out of the 198 entries, Colvelle was selected for his creation of the solar nexus – an affordable solar-charging device that can power a heater, radio, TV and light, which eliminates the need of batteries, paraffin stoves and open- fire cooking.

He won R250 000 worth of business support, which includes intellectual property protection, working capital, production development, mentorship and marketing expenses.

“We understand the plight of SMMEs so therefore provide a combination of financial and non-financial support to ensure the sustainability of businesses,” said Themba Mathe, acting group chief executive from Ithala.

Lloyd Gordon, the creator and owner of Vula Maths, received a R50 000 marketing voucher to help him market his existing innovation, an application that allows pupils to learn mathematics freely without incurring costs.
