Bulwer music group hits all the right notes

TRADITIONAL music group Homeboys, from Bulwer, has won a trophy after coming first out of 50 music groups at the Isicathamiya competition, held in Durban last Saturday.

The competition was organised by the Playhouse Company and promotes and celebrates the Isicathamiya traditional music genre.

This kind of music, mostly sung by groups of men from rural areas for entertainment, now receives much support from government and municipalities. This music is created by a group of bass singers, joined by a couple of tenors, altos and a lead voice.

The founder of Homeboys, Snothi Kunene, established the group in 2009 to distract young people from using drugs and alcohol in the Lubomvana village outside Bulwer. He said crime was high in the area but, somehow, after the group was established, crime decreased.

Kunene said he spends weekends and school holidays training young people in this kind of music.

“The group has won over six trophies after participating in many competitions.

“We perform at events, funerals and government ceremonies,” he said.

Kunene added that young people who play this kind of music have developed a sense of respect and kindness and are focusing on their careers.
