Bus accident victims remembered

ON Wednesday mourners and government officials attended the memorial service of 16 bus victims in Bulwer, who lost their lives in an accident in Ntunjambili last Saturday.

The bus was transporting passengers to a traditional wedding when it overturned.
It is reported that eight occupants, including the driver, suffered critical injuries.
Thirteen passengers died at the scene and two died later in hospital.
At the service the KZN MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda said the 16th person had died and sent his condolences to the families.

Dignitaries who attended included chairperson of the port- folio­ committee of Transport, Ntombikayise Sibhidla- Saphetha­, MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, Deputy Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga, mayor of Harry Gwala District Municipality, Mluleki Ndobe, Ubuhlebezwe mayor Zamo Nxumalo, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality­ mayor Ngeneleni Mncwabe, and government officials.

Kaunda said safety programmes were launched over the Easter weekend and many buses and taxis were checked. “Passengers must always use safety belts,” said Kaunda.

Mncwabe said she is saddened.
“This is a heartbreaking incident for the community of NDZ especially the families. God is capable of healing wounds and we will continue to pray for them.

“Officials from the municipality and councillors will visit families to give support,” Mncwabe said.

The victims will be buried this weekend.
