Calls for justice as ‘Malala’ laid to rest

THE funeral service for murder victim Vusumzi “Malala” Mhlawuli took place on Sunday, October 21.

The funeral service, held at the Bhongweni Youth Centre last Sunday, was attended by local political leaders, including Greater Kokstad Municipality Mayor Bheki Mtolo

At the service, speakers called on the SAPS to arrest the perpetrators soon. Other speakers asked SAPS to fight crime, which they say is getting out of control in Kokstad.

Mhlawuli was reported missing from his home in the Horseshoe township on October 5 and his body was found at the Umzintlava River on October 15.

Angry community members allegedly burnt six houses near his home, and streets were also blocked with heavy rocks and burning tyres, as residents demanded justice.

Prince Vusilizwe Matomane, of the Umzintlanga Royal Traditional Council, thanked the community of Horseshoe for standing up against crime.

Matomane said crime in Kokstad is a rising concern and that they have organised a prayer against crime, which will be held in Kokstad on Friday, October 26.

“SAPS need to work with communities to end crime,” he said.

According to the leader of Community Policing Forum (CPF) from Horseshoe, Mawethu Nocanda, crime figures are concerning in the area.

He said there are high rates of drug and alcohol usage, and murders and they need a crime awareness campaign in place.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo said: “SAPS are still investigating his murder and no arrest has been made yet.”
