SAPS confirmed that a case of negligent driving was opened after the Greater Kokstad Municipality mayor’s vehicle collided with a Prestige Security Services bakkie on October 26.

SAPS spokesperson, Dumisani Ncongo, said police are taking statements from witnesses and both drivers and a docket will be sent to a public prosecutor to decide about the case.

The accident happened on the corner of Barclay and Hawthorn streets and two employees from a security company were treated for minor injuries.

Another one was critically injured and transferred to a hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

On November 3, Fever published the story, which indicated that the mayor, Bheki Mtolo was not driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The municipality said investigations are under way.

No one has been charged yet.
