CCTV cameras installed in Matatiele

2015-11-20 07:56

MATATIELE law breakers will have nowhere to hide now that the municipality has installed 13, 24-hour surveillance cameras all over town.

The cameras, costing R800 000, have been set up in different parts of town in a bid to help fight crime.
Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Momelezi Mbedla said that many elderly people are robbed by people pretending to assist them when they withdraw money from an ATM.

“The main purpose of installing these cameras is to keep the town crime-free and maintain safety for the Matatiele community. Matatiele has grown as a town, therefore it is our responsibility and that of the Matatiele SAPS, to ensure that our people are safe at all times and criminal activities are monitored,” he said

Mbedla said one person has been hired to monitor the cameras.

“We already have one person monitoring, but we are looking into hiring four more people to monitor the cameras on a 24-hour basis,” he said.

He said the cameras are able to store information for up to a month.

He urged the community to come to the municipality should they be aware of criminal activity in the Matatiele CBD. The whereabouts of the cameras cannot be disclosed for security reasons.
