ORPHANS in the Mpeshu Village, outside Harding, who previously lived in a dilapidated building, have had their lives changed for the better after they were presented with a three-room house to live in.

On June 26, the keys to the house were handed over to the 17-year-old girl who looks after her three younger siblings and her one-year-old child.

KZN MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Ravi Pillay and Umuziwabantu Municipal mayor Dixie Nciki were among guests present who handed over the keys to the orphans.

A new bed, a table, chairs and groceries were also donated to the children. In the village, 1 000 housing units are under construction for poor families.

Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs community development worker Jabu Zwane, from KwaMbotho (also in Harding) said the children have been in a terrible position, living in an old mud structure with large holes in it.

“The children were living with their grandmother, but she died in 2016 and their mother disappeared in the same year.

“They were assisted to get child support grants from the government,” said Zwane.

The teenage girl had to leave school last year because she had to look after her child and younger siblings.
