THE Griqua Traditional Council hosted a blissful annual Griqua Festival which was interesting with lots of music and fun activities in Kokstad last Saturday.

It was aimed at promoting and restoring traditional values within the Griquas people living in Kokstad and surrounding areas. People wore traditional outfits as part of social cohesion and unity building.

On Saturday morning, they gathered next to the Adam Kok 111 grave and moved along Hope Street with a band playing music and majorettes, until they reached Riverview Stadium where the main event was held. Traditional Council chairperson Gabriel Marais thanked sponsors and the people for making the event a success. “The event was supported by the Greater Kokstad Municipality, the Department of Arts and Culture and private companies,” said Marais.

Griqua people who were proud of their cultural background attended the event all the way from Matatiele, Umzimkhulu, Cedarville, Mount Ayliff and Port Shepstone.

Adam Kok 111 was a leader of the Griqua community.
