CHILDREN from three separate schools around KwaThunzi Village were told about their rights during a Child Protection Week and Children’s Day event held at the KwaThunzi Hall outside Bulwer on Wednesday.

The event was hosted by Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma (NDZ) Municipality in response to national Government ’s mandate.

This year’s theme was “working together to protect children” and some of the key points highlighted by speakers included parental skills, children’s rights, domestic violence, sexual abuse and emotional abuse.

The SAPS told all about police work and encouraged everyone to protect children.

The Department of Education taught people about the importance of documentation, and encouraged community members to support schools.

NDZ Municipality gender and human rights officer, Bongi Ngcobo said that in December last year, the municipality was informed about the increasing numbers of rape cases involving children between five to 14 years of age in the village.

Ngcobo said that the event was held to respond to that and to condemn such cases. “In most rural places, children are being neglected because of parents that abuse alcohol. Children must know where to report cases like sexual abuse, domestic violence and emotional abuse and there are non-governmental organisations that can assist,” said Ngcobo.

Children at the event were also given toiletries as part of the programme’s promotion of good hygiene.
