CHRISTMAS came early for 450 children from all wards under Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality as they received gifts and school bags from the municipality and donors last Thursday.

At the event in Kelabantwana village outside Underberg, people were told to let ward councillors know if there are children who lack support and who need uniforms.

A total of 100 vulnerable children and orphans in the village get spiritual support and are taught about their rights by NGOs in the village.

Disabled children also receive support from NGOs.

Bongi Ngcobo, the gender and human rights officer from Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality, thanked NGOs and shops that donated gifts for the children.

“From each ward we selected 13 children and in Ward 11 we selected 218 children to give Christmas gifts to. The elderly also received gifts,” said Ngcobo.

He said through a partnership with SAPS, Department of Health, Home Affairs and councillors children are helped to get birth certificates, child support grants and school uniforms.

Operation Sukuma Sakhe chairperson Basil Ntshiza said children were identified by ward councillors and NGOs.
