UAC RUNNERS participated in both Hibiscus Coast and Gaterite marathons on Tuesday this week at the local Ugu Sports & Leisure and Verulam recreation grounds respectively.

35 runners participated in the Hibiscus ultra-marathon while 15 participated in the Gaterte marathon in the 48 km, 42.2 km and half marathons including the 10 km run/walk.

These marathons were the last qualifiers for the Comrades Marathon which takes place during June 2018.

All UAC runners have already qualified for the Comrades Marathon. Club chair Pardon Mathebula said that the courses of these marathons are tough and are chosen by most runners because they adequately prepare them for the 12-hour gruelling race on June 10. “Mass runners who participated were attracted by running along beautiful land marks, such as routes along the sea in Hibiscus and the turn at the King Shaka Airport in Verulam,” said Mathebula.

All participating UAC runners finished in both marathons. Top runners from the club clocked at 2 hours, 45 minutes and 44 seconds, 2 hours 46 minutes 26 seconds and 2 hours 46 minutes and 55 seconds respectively. These scores indicated extraordinary teamwork as the Kenyans runners do both in training and racing. This strategy makes them dominate the world in marathons,” said Mathebula.
