ROAD runners from all over the country and abroad will converge to the Pietermaritzburg City Hall to start the greatest marathon on earth on Sunday, June 10.

Thousands of runners taking part are motivated, among other things, by the colour of the medal.

The elite runners go for gold, but most importantly the prize money, while other medals are also of interest for the high performers in the race.

However, runners who make the Comrades Marathon are the mass runners who go there to finish the race in twelve hours. This year’s Comrades is the 92nd edition popularly known as a “Down Run” with the distance of 90,184 km to be exact.

Ugu Athletics Club (UAC) will be represented by 20 runners, 14 seasoned runners and six novices, that is, runners doing the Comrades Marathon for the first time.

According to the founder of the club, Eddie Ramaloo, these novices are the product of a heavy training programme and he predicts that they will do well.

The big race is three days away, UAC runners are advised that at this stage there is nothing they can do except to go there and run their race with one goal, that is to finish the race and make the club proud.
