LOCAL businesses recently came together with the goal of building three extra classrooms at Matatiele Primary School.

Last Friday, they observed the start of the construction and conducted a sod-turning event to mark the construction of the classrooms at the school.

Ward 19 Councillor Joe Van Wyhe said he had approached local businesses and companies to sponsor three new classrooms after he observed the dire overcrowding situation at the school.

“When I started working as a ward councillor in 2016, I committed to raise funds to help the school with extra classes as a way to reduce overcrowding.

“From August this year, I started asking sponsors to support the school,” he said.

Matatiele Primary has 1 196 pupils from grade R to grade nine and is the only no-fee school in Matatiele. The school was opened in 1984.

“The school desperately needs extra classes and toilets.

“We have already converted a computer lab into a classroom after experiencing overcrowding,” said school principal Phumeza Ngcobo.

Department of Education Alfred Nzo West District Mount Currie circuit manager Kevin Steven Gunkel promised to bring textbooks and furniture as well as extra teachers to the school and called for pupils to work hard.

The school’s head-boy, Naledi Jafta, thanked sponsors for supporting the school.
