Community project receives a boost

2018-06-08 06:01

UMUZIWABANTU Municipality handed over craft materials to Siyaphambili Co-operative as part of an effort to support local people on May 16.

The co-operative was established by community members of Ward 2 who were overwhelmed when they accepted the craft materials.

Umuziwabantu Municipal Deputy Mayor Nozibele Dzingwa said the municipality is keen on supporting local co-ops. She formed part of a group of municipal officials who visited community projects in Ward 2 as part of a monitoring and evaluation effort. She said the projects were supported by the municipality through a local economic development programme.

Bashiyile Mthembu, the founder of Siyaphambili Co-operative, said their co-operative was not producing enough because there were no work materials.
“We asked the municipality to support us and we are happy about its response. We want to showcase our makings at various cultural and arts exhibitions,” said Mthembu.

Umuziwabantu Municipality Local Economic Development officer Siphamandla Shabalala, Thandeka Mhlakaza and Jabu Zwane, were thanked for making sure that the co-operative receives support from the municipality.

The municipality asked other communities to establish their own co-operatives to defeat poverty.
