A PROTEST by the community of Mpharane village outside Mount Fletcher was called off after the Elundini Local Municipality mayor, Nonkongozelo Lengs, promised to attend to their demands last Friday.

The community is demanding electricity, better roads and RDP houses.

Lengs told Fever that 500 village households have no electricity. He said the municipality will look into community demands in the next financial year.

“The municipality is getting electricity from Eskom, so people must wait for the next
financial year. The ward councillor has been instructed to give information regarding service delivery programmes to the people,” said Lengs.

During the protest seven people were arrested and charged with public violence, but were released without bail. When they appeared in court the community waited outside the Mount Fletcher Magistrate’s Court.

Bonang Tsoho was one of those arrested and blamed police who fired rubber bullets at protesters. He said petitions have been sent to the municipality, but they’ve had no response.
