WITH 20 000 athletes qualified to compete at the world’s oldest ultramarathon, Comrades Marathon organisers have started conducting workshops around the country.

Official Comrades coach Lindsey Parry, who has been conducting the Bonitas Comrades Seminars around the country, said that, so far, they have been running smoothly, with some interesting comments and questions.

“The seminars are the overview of the road and focus on what the runners should be doing,” he said.

“There are also nutritionists who tell the runners what to eat during their preparation for the marathon.”

The seminars, which started last month with the Nedbank Athletic Club in Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal, will continue at the Witbank Eskom Gijimas in Mpumalanga on Tuesday. On Thursday, they move to the Rustenburg Marathon Club in North West.

Last Saturday, seminars were hosted in Durban to specifically enable female athletes to feel comfortable among themselves and ask health-related questions.

“Women’s seminars help prepare them to ask questions that they maybe wouldn’t ask in a general workshop,” said Parry.

Women’s seminars are designed to provide insightful advice and professional support for women who have entered the down run.

Parry said the workshops were successful.

“The turnout has been good. We have had interesting questions, which is the point of the seminars.”

Other women’s seminars will be held on Saturday at Montecasino in Johannesburg and at the Southern Sun Hotel in Pretoria on March 3.

The 93rd marathon will take place on June 10 and will be a down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, covering a distance of 89 km.

Details of the seminar dates and venues are available on the Comrades website at comrades.com — Supplied.
