Concern over Adam Kok statue

2017-08-25 06:00

THE recognition of Griqua people, addressing the needs and interests of Griquas and respecting the rights and heritage of the Griquas in the land of their forefathers are aspects the East Griqualand Pioneer Council (EGPC) has addressed with Greater Kokstad Municipality (GKM) on several occasions.

Submissions were made to the Kokstad mayor and councillors on August 5, 1998 and the EGPC had to resubmit requests on May 14, 2001.

In that meeting, it was also resolved that the estimate cost of the statue be obtained by the EGPC. I welcome the intention of the GKM to avail funds to erect a statue of our Adam Kok III. The GKM must uplift Griqua people and do further consultations on the right path and embark on the foundations laid by the EGPC.

I ask the GKM to stop communicating and holding meetings with illegitimate or self-proclaimed leaders. I encourage the GKM to arrange a meeting with the EGPC so as to find solutions.
