POLICE have opened an inquest docket following the drowning of an 11-year-old boy at Shayamoya Dam on Wednesday.

Linmotha Zeka (11) was swimming with his 10-year-old friend when the tragedy occurred.

The dam was overflowing after heavy rains last week.

The community and his family were called to the scene to save Linmotha, however, it was too late for the Grade 6 pupil who attended Seven Fountains Primary School.

His devastated father, Nkosithethile Titise, wants the municipality to close off the dam so that children will have no access to it.

“Why was the dam left open without a warning sign or fence? We need answers because the dam is dangerous to the community,” said Titise.

Community members, neighbours and local churches are offered support and prayers to the family.

Ward councillor Zodidi Tshazi sent condolences to the family and asked community members to report unsecured dams to the municipality.

The Greater Kokstad Municipality Fire and Rescue Unit station officer, Thomekile Ngodwana, said the dam is going to be closed.
