ACRATER containing overflowing water is not being monitored or repaired in Coulter Street in Kokstad, leaving the community and motorists uneasy.
People who live near the street have said that the hole was dug and then left open by municipal workers in May last year, and it now has unclean water overflowing from it, which runs into their yards.
Motorists have also complained, saying that it is dangerous to drive on this road, especially at night. Kuhn Godden, who lives in the area, said the hole has to be closed before it causes further damage in his yard. Godden and his neighbour also complained of mosquitoes and blamed the possibly contaminated water for this.

“Municipal officials dug this hole last year and left without closing it and I am scared children may drown in it. My yard looks dirty all the time and I feel embarrassed when I have visitors,” said Godden.

Another neighbour said motorists who use the street are at risk because there is not even a warning sign up.

Harry Gwala District Municipality did not respond to questions sent by the Fever at the time of going to press.
