Criminals terrorise community

2018-03-23 06:00

COMMUNITY members of Kokstad are living in fear of criminals who break into their homes and steal valuable items.
From March 1 to March 9, 15 cases of housebreaking have been reported at the Kokstad Police Station.

Between March 2 and March 9, four cases of housebreaking were opened for investigations by Horseshoe house owners.

A woman from Horseshoe found the windows to her home broken upon returning from work one afternoon.
Items such as blankets, clothes and groceries were stolen. The incident happened on March 6.

In a separate case, items with an estimated value of R7 300 were stolen while a home owner was at church.
Clothes, shoes and groceries with an estimated value of R10 000 were stolen while another home owner was at work.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo confirmed the cases.

He encouraged people to create a strong relationship with their community policing forums to fight crime.

“It looks like criminals are targeting houses when owners are at work,” he said.
Ncongo said police are concerned about this kind of crime and that a search for the criminals is underway.

“What worries us is that we don’t know where these stolen items are being sold but police will not rest until they arrest perpetrators.
He added that people should stop buying stolen goods because that itself, is a crime.
“People who are found with stolen goods will be charged and prosecuted,” said Ncongo.
