KOKSTAD man Thandabantu Rhafuza has assured people that nothing will deter him from running because running is his source of life and happiness.

Rhafuza completed the 5km walk during the Kokstad Link Pharmacy Marathon, held in Kokstad last Saturday, on crutches, inspiring many people with his determination.

Rhafuza was welcomed by Tsidi Lesapho, who assisted runners with water and beverages at the marathon.

Rhafuza was involved in a car accident in November last year and has been using crutches for walking ever since.

“I am very happy to finish my race. I wanted to participate at the marathon to inspire other people.

“Running reduces chances of getting diseases like sugar diabetes and flu,” he said, adding that many people were surprised to see him walking with crutches at the marathon.

Rhafuza encouraged other people to run as a way of eliminating poverty and to improve their fitness.

Last year Rhafuza won the Kokstad Link Pharmacy Marathon, a 21km race. In past years he also participated in a number of marathons including the Comrades Marathon, Two Oceans Marathon, Soweto Marathon and Richards Bay Marathon under the Nedbank Athletics Club.

“I participated nine times in the Comrades Marathon, except for this year because of my leg injuries,” he said.
