Dam levels improve after rain

2017-03-17 06:02

WHILE some people had to bear the brunt of floods after the recent heavy rains, water levels at local dams have improved.
The Umzintlanga River overflowed resulting in mud houses and shacks being washed away in Mphela.

Harry Gwala District Municipality said all dams are estimated to be 70% full.

Municipal spokesperson, Ndabezitha Tenza said the municipality is to continue with water restrictions until water levels improve “exceptionally”.

Crystal Dam, that supplies water to Kokstad, is sitting at 80%.
“People must continue to use water sparingly and they must use every drop wisely,” said Tenza.

Margi Fleming, Kokstad Chamber of Commerce spokesperson, asked people to be sensible when using water as winter, the driest months, is on the way.

“Farmers are very grateful for the rains which had an amazing impact for many, but there are still areas which are desperately in need of rain.
“We hope there will continue to be good rain as we approach winter season.
“Farmers are now working very hard to harvest crops and feed for the winter after a couple of difficult years.

“I hope the Kokstad community continues to use water carefully and with consideration to ensure a steady supply,” said Fleming.
