GREATER Kokstad Municipality (GKM) Mayor Bheki Mtolo said at a media briefing held recently that the municipality is now financially stable.

Prior to this the municipality experienced great financial difficulty. Mtolo took office in August last year after the local-government elections.

He said that as of January 31, GKM showed resilience with regard to its finances. “I want to make sure that GKM is one of the best-performing municipalities in the country.”

He said the municipality has a duty to change Kokstad by introducing infrastructural projects.

A small-town rehabilitation project was awarded at a value of R15,4 million and a landfill site is going to be built near Horseshoe. The total value of the contract is R3,8 million.
A total of R4,8 million has been set aside to construct mid-block roads and before the end of this month the municipality is expecting the Shayamoya Community Hall and the Ward 8 Community Hall to be completed.

A service provider has been appointed to upgrade Extension 7 roads as well as do the electrification of Wansberg, which is budgeted at R4,5 million. The Jim Payne Sports Complex project has been awarded to a contractor at a total value of R12,7 million.
