MZINGISI Nongogo from Kokstad is asking for help as he had spent almost three weeks sleeping in the streets of Kokstad town due to fears for his safety at his own home. Speaking to the Fever, the 49-year-old man said that he preferred sleeping under the verandas , safe from thugs and danger.

Nongogo said that he was staying in the Marikana area and he left because thugs had been terrorising his life.

“Thugs took advantage of me by robbing me, stealing money and sometimes broke into my house. I also experienced difficulties when I moved around with my wheelchair because the surface was uneven,” said Nongogo who added that he was given the wheelchair when he was affected with polio.

Nongogo said that last year, he stayed with his family but moved away to stay in Marikana in February.

He said that sleeping outside makes him feel safe as compared to sleeping at his house in Marikana. However, cold winter conditions make his life difficult.

Nongogo asked for any good Samaritan to donate a shelter at a place which will be accessible and safer for him. Greater Kokstad Municipality disability officer, Jabulani Mhlongo said that he will help Nongogo to get assistance because his life is at risk.

“He [Nongogo] informed me about his condition and I made a follow-up with his family. To see a disabled person sleeping outside is not right and I will make sure that he is gets help because he is too old to sleep in the cold,” said Mhlongo.
