GREETINGS to Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma (NDZ) and Harry Gwala district communities. It is a great pleasure that we bring to you the municipal viewpoint of this new municipality that contains updates, developments and upcoming events taking place within your municipality.

The Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality has a plan to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality. According to the plan, NDZ can realise these goals by drawing on the energies of its people, growing an inclusive economy, building capabilities, enhancing the capacity of the municipality, and promoting leadership and partnerships throughout society.

To accelerate progress, deepen democracy and build a more inclusive society, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality must translate political emancipation into the economic well being of all.

It is up to residents to fix the future, starting today. This plan envisions a municipality where everyone feels free yet bound to others, where everyone embraces their full potential, a municipality where opportunity is determined not by birth, but by ability, education and hard work. Realising such a society will require transformation of the economy and focused efforts to build the municipality`s capabilities. To eliminate poverty and reduce inequality, the economy must grow faster and in ways that benefit all residents.

In particular, young people deserve better educational and economic opportunities, and focused efforts are required to eliminate gender inequality. Promoting gender equality and greater opportunities for young people are integrated themes that run throughout this municipal plan.

The programme of Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) is still visible and continues to bring change to people’s lives.

We urge people to use these war rooms so they can have a chance to interact with the government department officials and use these war rooms as a platform to offload their problems so that a solution can be found.

It is without a doubt that the EPWP project contributes a lot for the people of Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma in social and economic aspects. The role of public employment initiatives, such as the expanded public works programme will be considered as one of the strategies to uplift the lives of our people.

Even if NDZ Municipality achieves economic growth every year and employment rises rapidly over the next five years, there will still be a need for such programmes in the future.

In line with this administration’s commitment to create a caring municipality through redress, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Council allocated that certain projects will take priority as part of the back-to-basics programme.

The election of ward committee structures is currently under way, some wards have completed the election process and other wards will complete before the end of October.

These are the structures whereby community issues are discussed at length, and hence the outcomes of these meetings inform the agenda for the council. Through ward committees, public participation is enhanced as part of the municipal Systems Act.

We encourage our community members to come forward whenever they have something they want to inquire about or discuss with the municipality, because as Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality we have an open-door policy, however, we encourage our people to follow the proper channels when they want to schedule a meeting with the municipal leadership or management.

I would like to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the upliftment of Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma community, which is demonstrated by the various initiatives we have undertaken and continue to drive in this area as outlined in our integrated development plan document (IDP).

We believe that a holistic approach is needed to address the challenges here at Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and that working together as stakeholders will assist in achieving our goals. We need to work together as one community because working in silos cannot be the silver bullet with which to address many layers of issues around our communities.

It is for this reason we have numerous programmes running in order to address the socioeconomic situations that often give rise to the high levels of social ills, which this community witnesses every day.

We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who came and supported us at the 2016 Duzi 2 Sani, we appreciate all your support and promise that next year will be even much bigger and better.

Today one can safely say without a doubt that development exists and lives at NDZ, this is also shown by the level of public participation reflected by our community members, who constantly remind us that people govern, as they engage us in informative debates for the betterment of their municipality and because of them we strive to improve every day.

I thank you.
