THE Eastern Rangers FC were victorious at the Ntobeko Mavuka Soccer and Football Tournament, played in Kokstad last weekend, walking away with R20 000 and the first place trophy.

Eastern Rangers defeated Bhubesi FC 2-1 at the game final, which was played at Bhongweni Stadium last Sunday.

The tournament was held for the first time in Kokstad by councillor Ntobeko Mavuka, who worked at Harry Gwala District Municipality.

A prize-giving ceremony was held at the Bhongweni Youth Centre on Sunday evening where Bhubesi FC were given a cash prize of R7 000, a trophy and medals for coming in the second place while Bush Bucks FC came in the third place, earning the side a R3 000 cash prize.

The tournament was hosted as part of Youth Day celebrations in Kokstad.

Families of former football legends who played a huge role in the development sport in Kokstad were given trophies and gas heaters as a gift.

Some of the legends include former Eastern Rangers founder Eric Ndamse, football player who once played for several renowned teams Nkosinathi Msinyane, former Maritzburg United assistant coach Urban De Kok, owner of Leeds United FC Mshefana Lugayeni and other people who have contributed to developing the sport in Kokstad.

Mavuka encouraged young footballers to follow in the footsteps of former football legends. “Many people played a big role in the development of sport in Kokstad and they require recognition,” said Mavuka.

Football players Minentle Xaba of Bush Bucks FC and Ndumiso Gana from Waterfall Rangers scored four goals at the tournament and were awarded trophies for best goal scorers.

Netball teams were also rewarded at the event.
