THE Economic Freedom Fighters in Umzimkhulu has called for Umzimkhulu Local Municipality Manager Zweliphansi Skhosana and the mayor, Mphuthumi Mpabanga, to be suspended, accusing them of corruption and the mismanagement of funds.

The party marched to the municipal offices last Friday to hand over a memorandum, but no one came out to receive it, and they later dispersed.

Mpabanga said the march was not authorised by the municipality and the EFF did not want to follow the correct procedure when applying for permission to march.

He said the EFF only applied five days before marching instead of seven days, which is the regulation.

“The municipality cannot grant a march if a notice is late. If the notice was handed in on time the municipality would have been enough time and delegated someone from the municipality to receive the memorandum, and provide security for the marchers,” said Mpabanga.

The EFF’s Linda Mbele said the party has noted there are municipal officials under investigation, yet they remain employed in the municipality.

“We believe it’s a mistake to keep them on - they should be put on suspension,” said Mbhele.

He added the mismanagement of funds has created a bad image for the municipality and called for it to be placed under administration until investigations are complete.

The EFF also said they want the municipality to install electricity in all of Ward 1 and threatened to protest if the municipality fails to deliver proper services to the people.

“In Magqagqeni village there is no electricity and the road is in a bad state. We want the municipality to pay attention to our demands,” said Mbhele.

He also called for an end to the political killings in Umzimkhulu.
