A NEW Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor, Lionel Fortein, was inaugurated at a special council meeting hosted by the Greater Kokstad Municipality (GKM) at Bhongweni Youth Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Fortein replaced former EFF councillor Martha Dlakavu who died on March 26.

Kokstad Magistrate B. Madikizela presided over Fortein’s inauguration while other councillors and the community witnessed it.

Speaking to the Fever at the inauguration, Fortein said he is grateful for the appointment and will be fighting for poor people.

“I am pleased to join the GKM council,” said Fortein.

The EFF’s regional interim leadership member, Dumisani Dlamini from the Harry Gwala District, said Fortein is required to stand in for the poor people of Kokstad, not only EFF members, in the municipality.

“During the 2016 local government elections, he [Fortein] played a huge role in EFF campaigns and many people from Ward 10 supported him. I want him to speak out when other councillors do wrong things,” said Dlamini.

GKM speaker Zolani Mhlongo said there are things that are not allowed to be done by councillors, like going to work under the influence of alcohol, or addressing people without the knowledge of the municipality.

“There are rules and regulations that are guiding councillors and we want Fortein to adhere to the rules. The municipality will be providing training for Fortein so that he understands what is required of him,” said Mhlongo.

People in the gallery congratulated him on his appointment and wished him well.
