WOMEN who work at SAPS, the traffic department and SANDF have shown men that they can fight crime without being assisted by their male colleagues.

Holding a roadblock five kilometres away from Kokstad yesterday, the female officers stopped cars to check for dangerous weapons, un-roadworthy vehicles, motorists driving under the influence, and for cases of overloading.

They also issued fines to drivers who had failed to abide by the rules of the road.

Before the roadblock was opened, they started with a parade at the Greater Kokstad Municipality traffic offices where Greater Kokstad Municipal Community and Social Services executive manager Pateka Qwabe motivated the women to be strong when fighting crime.

Qwabe said the Department of Community and Social Service needs more women, stating: “Women are capable of doing anything that men do.”

Colonel Khanyi Nala, the station commander of Kokstad Police Station, said they will fight crime by visiting taxi ranks, closing illegal liquor stores and holding roadblocks in Kokstad.

Nala also added that passion is what keeps women going.

Fever reporter spoke to Zama Sibisi, who was at the roadblock to represent SANDF with her female colleagues.

She said she started working for the department eight years ago and loves fighting crime.

Sibisi also said working at SANDF is not a difficult job for women and encouraged young women to join the sector.
