ARE cat lovers more likely to be single and introverted than dog lovers?

A study conducted by Facebook showed the differences between cat and dog owners based on the profiles of 160 000 Facebook users in America.

The study claimed the stereotypes are true - dog people are more outgoing, and cat lovers are more introverted.

According to the study:

• On average, dog people have 26 more Facebook friends than cat people;

• Like their extroverted pets, dog people make more connections online, although cat people are invited to more events;

• Cat people are 2,2 times more likely to befriend other cat people than randomly chosen friends from the general population. They befriend 1,8 times as many dog people as expected. So, cat people like other animal-friendly people;

• Dog people befriend 1,8 times as many dog people as random people, and 1,6 times as many cat lovers;

• Cat people are more likely to be single than dog lovers. About 30% of cat people are single, compared to 24% of dog people;

• Cat people seem to do more indoor activities than outdoor activities, and prefer movies and books that are fantasy, sci-fi and anime. Dog people like love stories and things about dogs; and

• Cat people express a wider variety of feelings on Facebook, while dog people are more likely to express excitement or pride.

Chase Valley vet Estee van Aardt said her cat lover clients usually had one or two cats.

“They look after them well, treat them for fleas, buy them scratch posts and keep their environment interesting,” she said.

“One of our clients, a photographer, has a website dedicated to her prized friend.

“One of my friends, a veterinarian and a cat person, married another cat person and now they have five cats,” said Van Aardt.

She said cat people seemed happier with their own company and being at home.

“I don’t think cat people are more likely to be single than dog people. It’s just that if you are single, a cat seems like less of a commitment than a dog; easier for a lock-up-and-go lifestyle.

“Dogs are usually associated with having a family. You can’t really take your cat along on holidays or to the beach, although some people do so,” she said.

“If your idea of a fun weekend is staying in, then a cat is perfect company, but if you like hiking, or the beach, a well-trained dog or two to join you is perfect,” she said.

Liberty Midlands Mall Sorbet manager and dog lover Jess Duke has four golden retrievers and is constantly outdoors with them.

“I much prefer being outdoors than indoors,” said Duke.

“I take them to the beach and the park regularly.”

She said she enjoyed meeting new people and making friends, and led an active life where she would rather be out in the sunshine than indoors, watching series or movies.
