Farm workers on strike

2017-09-22 06:00

WORKERS at Roivaal farm in D121 outside Harding have been on strike since Monday demanding a wage increase.
The Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) said the workers are also being deprived of their rights by the employer.

“Workers earn R2 000 a month, which is not enough for them to survive on.
“We want workers to get a R500 to R600 increase,” said August Mbhele, Food and Allied Workers Union organiser.

The farm owner, Angus Rennie, said the farm doesn’t have enough money to give the workers an increase.
He confirmed that salary negotiations between employer and the
union started in April.
“The farm has employed 170 general workers and since they downed tools on Monday business has been going down,” said

SAPS are monitoring the strike.
