RURAL farmers from Fever village in Matatiele have come together to form a community watch-group who will patrol the area at night to help end stock theft, reportedly a common occurrence in the area recently.

On Monday, farmers held a meeting with the Lukholweni Police Station commander Captain Beja who advised people to work with SAPS to end stock theft.

“In May 2016, I lost 22 sheep that were stolen from my yard. Another farmer lost 17 goats in the same year,” said community leader Vuyisile Mvakwendlu. He added that over 100 goats and sheep have been stolen from the village since 2016.

He said a herd of 18 goats was stolen from one of the local farmer’s yard and another seven goats were stolen from another yard last week.

He said criminals steal their stock at night.

“Sometimes police patrol at night and now we want to assist to catch these criminals,” said Mvakwendlu.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Raphael Motloung said police have been working with communities to fight stock theft crimes.

He asked communities to form forums to fight crimes.
