GKM building renaming under way

2017-08-18 06:00

STAKEHOLDERS and the Griqua community supported the proposal to rename the Greater Kokstad Municipality building at a consultative meeting last Friday. The municipality wants to rename the building after Adam Kok III and erect his statue in front of the building.

Glen Joubert, the Griqua and Khoisan representative said the municipality is going in the right direction by renaming the building after Adam Kok III.
He noted, however, that the renaming will not help Griqua and Khoisan people get out of poverty.

“Many Griqua and Khoisan people are unemployed and the renaming of the building is not going to create jobs for Griqua people.”
Another consultative meeting is to be held this month. Griqua Traditional Council chairperson Gabriel Marias asked the municipality to also rename a local park after Adam Kok III to promote historical sites of Griqua communities.
He thanked people for attending the meeting and said the Griqua community will meet to discuss more about the renaming.

The municipality issued a public notice to the media asking people to give written comment about the renaming.
