Walker said that, as part of rendering waste management services and ensuring the cleanliness of the area, the Greater Kokstad Municipality is responsible for public education on waste management. This is carried out through a number of activities such as raising awareness on illegal dumping and waste collection, among others.“The most common challenges affecting GKM are littering and illegal dumping. In response, the municipality has embarked on a clean-up campaign. The programme is about keeping public spaces clean and tidy and the objective is to try and change people’s attitudes and behaviour towards waste and the management thereof. This will instil a sense of taking charge and responsibility in people and keeping the neighbourhood clean,” said Walker. She added that more emphasis needs to be placed on ensuring that GKM citizens take a stand against littering in their neighbourhoods and start to clean up their own areas. Walker said they want to educate people on the fact that the impact of waste can be either positive or negative, depending on the mind-set of the communities.
