GKM Viewpoint

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in the fundraising for charity through the Vukani Charity Golf Day in partnership with GKM and Link Pharmacy.
The tournament managed to raise about R25 000, and R10 000 was donated to Elonwabeni Old Age Home.
The rest of the money was donated to a golf development programme that is aimed at developing the previously disadvantaged. Businesses and individuals who are willing to assist the Elonwabeni Old Age Home are more than welcome to continue assisting.

The proposed Kokstad Sports Complex construction site is situated on a portion of the remainder of Erf 1, Kokstad, along Jim Payne Drive, between Extension 7 Middle Income Residential Development and Kokstad Town.

The project, titled the Construction of Kokstad Sports Complex, will be carried out in two phases.

Phase 1 will consist of a main soccer pitch, rugby field with athletics track (grass), regional swimming pool and fencing.

Phase 2 will consist of a grandstand, netball court, change rooms and parking.
This project is a regional facility jointly supported by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Ministry of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs for servicing the Harry Gwala District Municipality and surrounding towns of KZN.
On the issues being raised by various stakeholders in Kokstad kindly note the following.

The trees along Jim Payne Drive will be retained.
There are, however, a few trees that will need to be removed to accommodate the proposed entrance and parking area for the development. The proposed access to the development is to be aligned with Hawthorn Street.

All movement within the development is designed for pedestrian movement, hence the construction of a parking area to limit vehicle movement within the facility.

Parking as per the approved designs is off Hawthorn Street into the development and past the row of trees mentioned above. The proposed possibility of upgrading to Astro Turf can be looked at when additional funding is requested from possible funders for other phases of the development.

Last year in November, the municipal council went out to the community with a view to hear their needs and also to prioritise those needs according to their urgency.

From April 9 to 16, the Greater Kokstad Municipal Council will partake in the same exercise as last year, but this time to report on the needs that were raised by the community and which projects have budgeted for in each ward.

The municipality, in partnership with the Human Rights Commission, SAPS, Correctional Services and Consumer Protection under Economic Affairs, has embarked on a three-day campaign of awareness and capacity building for stakeholders.
The programme started on March 13, where schools and farms were visited and people educated on their rights as pupils and workers, respectively. On March 14, the campaign took the form of a workshop as a capacity building exercise for stakeholders, and the programme ended with a celebration of Human Rights Day.

Thank you for lending me your eyes and ears. We will meet again, same time, same place!
