WARM greetings to the Kokstad community and community at large.

The women workshop will be held on May 18, with the theme “Women working together to achieve a common goal” at the Bhongweni Youth Center at 9 am. This is one of the initiatives taken by the gender office under the Special Programmes Unit within the office of the municipal manager. The office is responsible for various functions including, Women’s Caucus and The Gender Forum.

The purpose of the Women’s Workshop is to ensure that women partake in Government programmes and they are empowered with information and knowledge that will assist them in future to build better communities. The workshop will focus on parenting skills, substance abuse avoidance, teenage pregnancy and impregnation avoidance.

The focus of the workshop was influenced by challenges and experiences that are faced by women in Kokstad and around the globe as that of parenting children that are battling with substance abuse which has become a mushrooming quagmire. This challenge not only became a unanimous problem among Kokstad women, but it also gave rise to the need for parenting skills to be imparted onto the women of Kokstad. In addition, the increasing rate of teenage pregnancy and impregnation were also of a great concern. These parenting skills will also involve tools to help such parents deal with and help their children through and out of substance addiction as well as avoiding teenage parenthood.

The key stakeholders to the workshop is the Department of Social Development, Department of Health, South African Police Services, Department of Correctional Services, Community Policing forum, SANCA and NGO’s.

A week after the GKM Growth and Development Summit was held, the Harry Gwala District Municipality holds a two-day district wide Growth and Development Summit from May 15-16, under the theme; “working together for share growth and prosperity’’. This comes as a positive move for the Greater Kokstad area as it serves as a relevant platform to escalate some of the contribution made by GKM stakeholders during the growth and development summit. This gives us the hope that the work done so far will get the attention of potential investors at a larger scale. We appreciate and welcome the District initiative which complements the efforts of local municipalities within the Harry Gwala District.

Thank you for lending me your eyes and ears, we will meet again, same time, same place.
