WARM greetings to the Kokstad community and community at large.

The municipality has embarked on a project for the development of a new landfill site, called the Kranzfontein Landfill Site, in Ward Six. Currently the municipality is handling all the waste generated in Kokstad at the Shayamoya landfill site. The current landfill site is in the process of closure and rehabilitation and the municipality is faced with a problem that, should the capacity of the existing landfill be exhausted, then there will be no landfill to cater for the waste generated. It is through this environmental concern that the Kranzfontein landfill site is being implemented. The anticipated project completion is March 28, 2019.

The project scope covers the construction of the below.

• Cell 1 of the landfill

• Leachate pond

• Contaminated stormwater pond

• Leachate & stormwater drainage system

• Admin block and weigh bridge

The project is currently sitting at 20% completion and the employment opportunities created to date totals to nine people.

Last Sunday, the municipality held a meeting at Pakkies Community to address challenges raised by community members. Part of the meeting was to respond to the survey that was recently conducted by Community Participation Office which suggested that the community of Pakkies, in Ward Six, don’t know who their ward councillor is. After the presentation of the report to council, it was resolved that the ward councillor must be re-introduced to the community, even though she has had several community meetings in the ward and was introduced to the community after the inauguration of councillors in August 2016. Among other issues that the survey raised was people are not aware of what the municipal vision is. Last year the council adopted “A People-Centred City of Economic Possibilities by 2047” as its municipal vision. The survey is much appreciated and was an eye-opener. I can assure you that the municipality is looking at remedies and strategies to utilise in order to make sure that these issues are attended to with immediate effect.

Recently the municipality called on community members, through an advert, to come and register for the Indigent Support Subsidy. I must unfortunately inform community members that the registration is on hold due to technical glitches that have occurred internally but they will resume as soon as these issues are sorted out. Communities will be informed timeously.

Thank you for taking the time to read this issue. Let’s meet again, same time same place!
