WARM greetings to the Kokstad community and the community at large.

It is with great pleasure to inform you that the municipality had appointed Ms Pateka Qwabe as an Executive Manager: Community and Social Development Services. Ms Qwabe assumed her duties in the municipality on Monday, August 6. She joins the municipality with enormous experience and expertise accumulated over a number of years in both public and private sector.

She holds a Bachelor of Administration Honours, obtained from UKZN, and she further holds a postgraduate diploma in business management from UKZN. Ms Qwabe has an extensive experience in local government as she worked for 10 years at Ingquza Hill Local Municipality as a director of community services.

She also worked for private sector for a number of years as a Stakeholder Manager at Financial Services Board (Land Banking Financial Sector Regulator). She was also working for National Credit Regulator as a Communications Officer.

She joins the municipality to share her experience, learn from the community and form part of the team that is called upon to create a people-centred city of economic possibilities by 2047.

Let us join hands in welcoming Ms Qwabe to our family and ensure her that we are going to give her all the support so that she can execute her duties with diligence.

Greater Kokstad Municipality is an institution that values human dignity, human rights, social cohesion, women and children emancipation.

To commemorate Women’s Month the municipality will be hosting a Women’s Summit on August 16 and 17 at Bhongweni Youth Centre.

This summit will be held under the theme “Celebrating 100 years of Albertina Sisulu — Women united in moving South Africa forward”.

The purpose of this summit is to engage women around Kokstad on challenges they face in the society and come up with mechanisms that can be used to address social ills and socio-economic challenges.

Over and above, the summit will cover various aspects that include financial literacy of women, women in leadership, fight against teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and child abuse.

As the municipality we acknowledge the partnership with Old Mutual, Rolyats SuperSpar, eThekwini Toyota and sector departments who are working tirelessly to ensure the success of this summit.

I urge the people of Greater Kokstad to come out in numbers to commemorate the fighting spirit and resilience of women who raised against the injustices of the apartheid regime. Wathinta abafazi; wathint’ imbokodo.

In our continued effort to cater for the well-being of the elderly people of Greater Kokstad, the municipality in collaboration with KZN Department of Sport and Recreation held the Golden Games at Bhongweni Stadium this past Monday.

These Golden Games is an annual even that prepares the elderly people of Kokstad for their participation in the district, provincial and national Golden Games tournaments.

As the municipality we are of the view that participation of elderly people in these games is not for competitive purposes but also for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and social cohesion. We plead with our elderly people and society in general to participate in various sporting activities as a means of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Education, skilling and developing our youth is amongst the apex priorities of our municipality.

On August 3 the municipality in collaboration with National Department of Environmental Affairs will be hosting a Career Expo at Bhongweni Youth Centre.

The expo is targeting in-school and out of school youth who are willing to impart their knowledge and skills in various fields.

There are build-up programmes leading to the main event that include visits to high schools and setting up of information tables at the shopping malls and taxi ranks. Young people are urged to come out in numbers to get an opportunity to interact and engage with various exhibitors who will be eager to assist the youth of Kokstad.

Thank you for taking time to read this issue. Let’s meet again same time same place!
