September marks a month of heritage celebration across the country. It is with great joy that we inform you that this year’s National Heritage Celebration will be held here in Kokstad on September 24 at Riverview Stadium.

The theme for this year’s Heritage Month is “The Year of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela: Advancing Transformation of South Africa’s Heritage Landscape.”

The National Department of Arts and Culture have agreed to host this event in our backyard because of our commitment in promoting and enhancing social cohesion.

As we all know, Kokstad was named after Adam Kok III. As such, the GKM Council took a resolution to revive that historic milestone of 1863 by renaming the municipal building after Adam Kok III and erecting a statue of Adam Kok III in front of the municipal building.

Kokstad community, please be informed that we are not changing the name of the municipality or town, but we are renaming the municipal building. The municipal building was previously known as the GF Hynes building and now it is going to be the Adam Kok III Building.

We have in place a wide spread of celebrations and commemoration events that are a build-up to the main event.

Our build-up programmes started on Tuesday, September 4, where we saw the mayor, deputy mayor, and councillors leading a delegation that planted trees and vegetable gardens, and cleaned the illegal dumpsites at the Riverview and Eastview areas respectively.

Tomorrow, let us honour the invitation and take part in the Link Pharmacy Marathon as a means of promoting healthy living.

This coming Sunday, September 9, we are going to witness a parade escorting the Statue of Adam Kok III from the N2 T-Junction to the municipal building.

On September 22 we are going to have a Sports Day at Bhongweni Stadium with different cultures and traditions showcasing their talents. We are going to wrap up our build-up programmes on Sunday, September 23 by having a Cultural Festival at Bhongweni Youth Centre. Here we are expecting all cultures and traditions in the Harry Gwala District to come and demonstrate their pride and joy in the spirit of Unity in our Diversity.

The finale will be a dialogue later on that day, being led by Minister of Arts and Culture, Mayor of GKM, and representatives from different cultures. The dialogue will be broadcast live on SAFM. Umhlobo Wenene and Ukhozi FM will also be present.

As a municipality, it is in our best interest to see people from different cultures, race and creed living together in harmony and playing a pivotal role in creating a city of economic possibilities by 2047.

Until next time…
