WARM greetings to Kokstad and the community at large.

The Department of Home Affairs, in partnership with the Greater Kokstad Municipality, will be hosting the president of the Republic of South Africa Mr Cyril Ramaphosa on a service delivery visit on October 3.

There will be the handover of Franklin low income housing title deeds to home owners in the morning and thereafter we will proceed to the official opening of the Department of Home Affairs offices in Kokstad and to launch the ID campaign.

I would like to make a plea to the Kokstad community to come and collect their IDs as this will assist them to register as voters, especially the first time voters, as we are fast approaching 2019.

People must take this opportunity to collect and/or apply for ID documents.

Our government is trying to address the issues that the community is facing when it comes to Home Affairs services.

A word of gratitude to the community of Kokstad and the surrounding areas, to our neighbouring municipalities, and the Harry Gwala District Municipality family for making the National Heritage Day celebrations a huge success in Kokstad.

I would like to thank the Griqua community for the commitment and cooperation shown in the ceremony of honouring Adam Kok III.

Participation of government departments in the process was a good sign of functional intergovernmental relations. Indeed, together we can move Kokstad forward.

The municipality has commenced with the construction of a one-of-a-kind (and one of the biggest) projects that we take so much pride in — the construction of the Gym Payne Sport Complex.

I am proud to announce that the project has managed to provide 27 job opportunities so far. Thirty percent of the value of feasible work will be sub-contracted to local SMME’s.

The closing date for Electrical & Electronic sub-contract tenders to the project was September 25.

So far this is what has been done on site: Swimming pool — bulk earthworks completed; excavations completed; earth-filling completed; G5 filling completed; compaction completed; no-fines material completed; reinforcement for base/beam is at 89% and is still in progress.

Construction of change rooms — excavations for trenches completed; excavations for bases completed; concrete footings and columns completed; concrete bases and columns completed; reinforcement for bases and columns completed; foundation brickwork has also been completed; backfilling and compaction is at 80%.

Construction of Sport-field — so far there has been platform formation which is still in progress; sub-soil drain construction is at its teething stage and G7 laying and compaction is at its maturity stage.

Until next time…
