WARM greetings to the Kokstad community and community at large.

The Community Safety component of the Municipality has devised a plan to deal with enhanced traffic volumes and mobility, which ultimately creates opportunities for crime to manifest itself.

“Operation Thetha Nonembeza” will commence from December 14, and is aimed at enhancing law enforcement activities with the aim of ensuring safer societies. The focus areas of the operation will be: Driver’s Fitness, Vehicle Fitness, Drunken Driving, Public Transport Vehicles, Moving Violations, Speed Violations, Safety Belts, By-Law Enforcement (Parks, Public Disturbances), Transnational and Trans-border crimes, and Crime Prevention.

In order to maximise our efforts, the approach will be an integrated one, which will involve various stakeholders. Continuous awareness campaigns will be embarked upon in order to sensitise communities about crime and road safety imperatives.

I want to advise the Kokstad community that we are still experiencing major delays in the delivery of drivers’ licences from the DLCA. The situation is beyond our control as the DLCA, which is a subsidiary of the Department of Transport, is experiencing labour issues. The problem still persists despite commitments to have the matter resolved by the end of October. We urge the public to remain patient and also make use of the SMS system that has been put in place, aimed at providing feedback on the status of one’s driving licence.

In trying to improve waste management, the Municipality has purchased a skip loader truck. This will assist in fast-tracking the process of refuse collection in Kokstad.

This is due to the enormous growth that the town has experienced over the years, and collecting waste with tractors and one compactor truck is no longer effective.

Residents are urged to take note of the refuse collection schedule as follows: Monday: Wylde Road, all North areas of Wylde Road, Ext Seven; Tuesday: Areas between Wylde Road and Barker Street; Wednesday: Areas From Barker Street to Fleming Drive. Township Schedule: Monday: Emphela, Emahagu, Emagedemsini, Ezitandini, Ezibeleni, Ezidabulini; Tuesday: Homes 2000, Long homes, Area Five & Six, Nobuhle, White City; Wednesday: Khotso house, Zolani, Horseshoe, CBD; Thursday: Franklin and Swartburg. Friday: Shayamoya. Community members are urged to take out refuse only on the pick-up dates so that our streets can stay clean.

Maskandi, in partnership with Greater Kokstad Municipality, will be hosting the GKM Maskandi Festival on December 1. The event is from 2 pm.

National artists include the Thokozani Langa, Buselaphi, Sgwebo sentambo, Imithente Abafana Benkokhelo, Mroza, and many more. GKM local artist lineup includes the winners of the local artists’ competitions such as Amaqhawe Group, Amankentshane Group and Afro Soul Khanya and Meggan.

This is done with the aim of exposing local artists.

Until next time…
