THE miserable life of Thokozile Zungu (71), who has been living in a leaking shack for many years, was changed for the better recently.
Pensioner Zungu of Jonvelt area in Ixopo, thought she would die before getting proper shelter over her head, but the ANCYL’s Bacwebile branch changed her life.

Last Saturday Thokozile received the keys of a new two-roomed house, furniture, groceries and money donated by people.

ANCYL spokesperson in Harry Gwala, Sibusiso Phuzi said Thokozile’s life of living in a leaking shack touched neighbours, who couldn’t help because of their poverty.

“One of our youth members at the branch alerted us about the bad condition of Zungu. We, as the youth league regional leaders, decided not to fold our arms and visited Zungu’s shack early this year. Neighbours said on rainy days Zungu had to put buckets on her bed to catch the water.”

Phuzi said the youth asked for donations from businesses, municipalities and people.
“People donated bricks, cement and furniture, and others gave us money to complete the house.”

Jonvelt is dominated by unemployed youth and people who depend on social grants.

At the handover Thokozile thanked God and the people who changed her life.
Youth League provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo encouraged young people to care and love old people. Chairperson of the ruling party in Harry Gwala region, Zamo Nxumalo, said about 1 500 houses will be built in the area and many people will benefit from the project.
