IT was a day of happiness and great joy at Ibisi sport grounds outside Umzimkhulu last Saturday when gospel artist Lwando “Jumbo” Nyangiwe (27) celebrated his achievement with friends, community members and family.

In November last year, he won Best Song of the Year award at the 10th Crown Gospel Music Awards held in Durban. Gospel artists like Dumi Mkokstad, Bethusile Mcinga, Thobekile and others were among the people who went to celebrate Jumbo’s achievement. He thanked the Harry Gwala District Municipality, the Umzimkhulu Municipality and his fans for supporting his music.

He said it was not easy for him to follow a music career because some members of his family were not happy but through devotion and passion,he coped. “My mother taught me the song Singenise and it is the most popular song that is played on radio stations. It was through this song that I won Best Song of the Year award at the Crown Gospel Awards,” said Jumbo. He encouraged young people to refrain from drug abuse and alcohol. His manager, Mxolisi Mhlongo of Top Class Productions, said the production company is working hard to identify hidden talent in order to grow gospel music. Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Mluleki Ndobe said the district has many talented people who are a good example to the country. He called on people to support artists by buying their music.

Ndobe handed over a R30 000 cheque to Jumbo as a gift from the municipality.
