Government cares nothing for the poor

2017-09-08 06:00

I RECENTLY travelled with a friend to take her two adopted girls back home to their rural village for the school holidays. It is at a place called Centocow, which is inland from Ixopo.

I was appalled at the level of poverty I found there, despite being raised in a rural area myself.

Roads are non-existent from the main gravel road to the dilapidated mud houses in the small village.

The girls’ aged grandmother, their sole surviving blood relative, lives in a tiny round hut with a central pit fire which smokes and blackens the room, with only one window.

There is no electricity and no running water, and clothes and bedding are stacked against the wall.

It was heartbreaking leaving these young girls there, but they insisted they needed to be there for their granny, even if only for three weeks.

It is beyond belief that such poverty still exists post apartheid.

The truth is that we have an ANC government that cares nothing for the still barely educated and rural poor.

While they indulge in self-enrichment, the majority on the fringes have to survive on promises.

Talk about an ANC conscience.
