Gravel road under community attention

2018-05-25 06:01

INSTEAD of waiting for Government to re-gravel roads, rural women from Ward 6, in the Hlabeni village outside Bulwer have started maintaining a gravel road which they said was troubling.

They said that since the dawn of democracy, the roads have never received any Government attention.

More than 10 women from the village came together with the goal of helping Government maintain the roads.

From last weekend they used hoes and spades and worked on the road to make it better. Resident, Nosidumo Cele, who had been living in the area since 1981, said that they are tired of waiting for Government’s help.

Cele said that they have asked their ward councillor to put pressure on the municipality to maintain their road but nothing had been done. “Ambulances, hearses and other emergency vehicles do not reach us because of the road.

People living with disabilities also struggle to move with their wheelchairs,” said Cele.

Cele said that a certain part of the road has been completed and they are left with about a kilometre to complete.

Another villager, Silvina Ngcamu said that the road got worse on rainy days.

Ward councillor, Basha Zondi said that she and the Dr Nkosazana Dlamaini Zuma Municipality are aware of the bad state of the road and would be sending TLBs and graders to gravel the road, however, she did not specify when this would be done.

“The mayor has visited the area and the road will be fixed soon,” said Zondi.
