GREETINGS to the people of Greater Kokstad.

Easter weekend

WELCOME back the people of Kokstad after the long Easter weekend they enjoyed with their families. Some of us, locally and around the world attended church services.

Unfortunately, this period is often characterised by road accidents and fatalities.

As I was writing this piece the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters was about to release the final road accident statistics.

In Kokstad we ensured that traffic police were visible in all areas around the town and the roads leading to town. We thank the provincial Department of Transport for providing two “safe centres” in Kokstad, which enabled many drivers to rest and refresh before proceeding with their destination.

Another chance to register to vote

The Independent Electoral Commission has given South Africans another chance to register for 2016 local government elections. The weekend of 9 and 10 April have been set aside by IEC for everyone to register to vote. The previous voter registration didn’t go well according to the information by IEC. Only 21% of the people of Kokstad registered to vote. Remember that blood was shed and lives were lost in order for us to get the right to vote so we must exercise this to the fullest. I urge everyone to take this opportunity and register to vote on the above mentioned weekend.

Bhongweni Stadium progress report

The construction of Bhongweni Stadium was hit by technical challenges just as we were about to finish it. It was discovered that the turf will have to be redone before the artificial turf is laid again. We apologise to the people of Kokstad and the sports confederation for this delay. It was something beyond our control, however, I assure the people of Kokstad that the contractor is working tirelessly to finish the project. We know the stadium is needed by athletes, especially soccer teams, and we sympathise with everyone concerned. We want to give them the best soccer pitch, however, we could not continue with it when engineers discovered something that needed our attention. We hope for your co-operation in this regard.

Budget road shows

It is that time of the year where the municipality presents the draft budget for the 2016/17 financial year to the community and Kokstad stakeholders. In line with Municipal Financial Management Act 56 of 2003, as the municipality we are required to consult residents before we table our final budget. An advertisement has gone out listing the dates in all wards and we invite the community to take part in the road shows. It is important for you to have a say in the budget that the municipality will prepare for you, going forward. We hope to see you there.

Inkosi inisikelele.
